  • How often is the show? 

    • The second Wednesday of every other month                                (April, June, Aug, Oct, Dec - 2026)

  • How much are tickets? 

    • Pay-What-You-Can or in-kind donation.​

  • Do I have to read the book? 

    • Comedians who are booked on the show - YES please​!

    • Audience - Nope! But it'll be funnier if you do. 

    • Don't worry, we'll give a summary at the top of the show, so that everyone is on the same "page."

  • How do I get booked as a performer on the show?

  • Do audiobooks count as reading? 

    • According to the Public Library they sure do! ​

  • Is this a comedy show or a book club? 

    • Both! Performances will be based on the pre-announced book. The audience will also have a chance to give their feedback and talk about the book with each other in this community setting.

  • Will there be refreshments? 

    • ​Yep! What kind of bookclub would it be without drinks? 

  • What kind of books will you be choosing? 

    • Each bi-monthly (every other) book choice will be themed , with a priority on BIPOC authors.​

  • Where can I get this month's book? ​

    • Many of our book selections will be available at the library and on the Libby app.

    • We encourage you to buy from your local bookstore. Mention "Book Club Comedy Show" and receive a 20% discount at The Last Bookstore Studio City! ​​

About Monique Madrid

Monique is a wearer of many hats with an eclectic mix of experience. The Los Angeles-based comedian, writer, and producer (and sometimes actor) has an improv & sketch comedy background. She spent 10 years in the Chicago comedy scene, both behind the scenes as a hair and makeup artist, and as a performer in independent productions, as well as notable theaters, including The Second City.

 

She is the creator, writer, and producer of original podcasts, including GoKidsGo's Time Traveling Tonya, which she also voices, and the  2 Girls 1 Pup Pupcast. She was the lead producer and writer of the special limited series, Reimagine the Alliance Educator: The Podcast, and continues to produce other media for organizations and production companies. Monique has been a writer and interviewer for online magazines, including REDUCTRESS, MCSWEENEY'S, SOMEECARDS, and SERIAL OPTIMIST (acquired by VULTURE). She was also a participant in the invite-only ONION Writer's Workshop.

Prolific in her writing, Monique is also an emerging television screenwriter. She wrote for DISNEY CHANNEL HOUSE PARTY, and has multiple half-hour comedy samples, including adult-animated, ensemble, and grounded scripts, as well as more silly and surreal work. Ask to read one of her original pilots, including THE MISEDUCATION OF LAUREN HILLARD, which was a finalist in the WeScreenplay Television Competition and the Sundance Episodic Program.She is repped by Marilyn Atlas Management.

Monique was accepted as a 2025 Writer in Residency with the Château d'Orquevaux International Artists & Writers Residency (awarded The Denis Diderot Grant) where she'll be working on her memoir.​

 

When she's not working on her passion projects, Monique is available for hire as a consultant for corporate facilitation, live fundraiser production and hosting, writer of industrial shorts, newsletters, copywriting and other comms, as well as project management for creative content. She's happy to provide samples of her corporate portfolio and references from clients who will happily tell you of the stellar work you can expect when you work with Monique.
